Falling for Foster Care Event Builds Hope and Homes for Local Children Living in Foster Care
WHO: Psi Epsilon Omega Chapter (PEO) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in partnership with Pearl Elegance Foundation (PEF), Inc. and The National Center for Children and Families (NCCF)
WHAT: Falling for Foster Care is an inspiring evening focused on making a difference in the lives of children living in foster care in Washington, DC, and Maryland. “Black children make up a disproportionate number of youth in the foster care system relative to the total number of Black children in Maryland,” said Karen S. Hicks, president of PEO. “There are more than 4,300 Maryland children living in foster care and we are hoping that this event will help address this disparity.”
In 2020, Foster Care Capacity reported that 53.5 percent of Maryland foster youth are Black children compared to white and Hispanic/Latino foster youth at 31.3 percent and nearly 7 percent, respectively.
The event will feature speakers and foster families who will share information, resources, and ways to get involved with those interested in building hope and providing a loving home this holiday season and beyond. Members of PEO will also collect toys for the children supported by NCCF.
